Security guard allegedly kills man over phone theft in Ogun

A 26-year-old security guard, Muhammed Abubakar, employed to guard a building in the Ajaka area of Sagamu, has been alleged to have killed an unidentified man following accusations of attempted phone theft.

According to the PUNCH, the tragic incident reportedly occurred on Monday evening,

The police source indicated that Abubakar struck the man on the head with a large plank, causing fatal injuries.

Eyewitnesses, who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the case, described hearing a commotion from Abubakar’s post, which led them to notify the Sagamu Police Division.

Promptly responding, Inspector Ojo Alasofe accompanied residents to the scene, where they discovered the victim in a pool of blood, struggling to breathe.

A resident recounted, “We suspected something was wrong when we heard the noise. One resident was sent to the division to report the matter. The residents returned with a police officer. But when they got to the scene, they saw the deceased in the pool of his blood, gasping for breath.”

Upon questioning, Abubakar claimed he was using his phone when the deceased allegedly snatched it. Abubakar and another security guard reportedly apprehended the man, leading to a scuffle during which Abubakar struck him on the head with a stick.

Passersby alerted the police after hearing the victim’s screams and seeing the blood. The victim was rushed to Live Well Hospital but was declared dead upon arrival. His body was subsequently moved to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital for identification.

The police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that Abubakar has since fled, likely realizing the severity of his actions.

“Our men are working round the clock to apprehend him,” Odutola stated.

The incident has shocked the local community, prompting an ongoing investigation by the authorities.
