A limited edition £20 banknote inspired by Scott McTominay’s famous overhead kick for Scotland has been unveiled by the Bank of Scotland.
According to BBC, the special note was created to celebrate Scotland’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the nation’s first appearance at the men’s tournament since 1998.
The design combines traditional banknote features with imagery from McTominay’s spectacular goal against Denmark during Scotland’s qualification campaign.
Only 100 copies of the commemorative note have been produced, with 50 set to be distributed through auctions, prize draws, and special pop up events in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Scotland secured qualification for the World Cup with a 4-2 victory over Denmark at Hampden Park in November, with McTominay opening the scoring through an overhead kick.
“Reaching the biggest stage of world football is something every player dreams of, and I know it means everything to our fans,” McTominay said.
“Moments like that belong to everyone who follows the team, so seeing my goal featured on a Scottish banknote feels incredibly special.”
BBC reported that proceeds from the auction and prize draw would support Crisis Scotland, a charity focused on helping people experiencing homelessness.
Emma Noble, chair of the Scottish executive committee at the Bank of Scotland, described the goal as one of Scotland’s greatest football moments.
“Scott’s overhead kick is already regarded as one of the nation’s greatest ever goals,” she said.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, featuring 48 teams.
