At least 150 suspected bandits are feared to have drowned after a boat transporting them capsized on Saturday evening in the Sabon Gida area of Sokoto State.

Local accounts indicated that the vessel, reportedly conveying a large group of armed men, overturned while attempting to navigate a body of water in the area, throwing all passengers into the river.

Eyewitnesses reported significant casualties following the incident, noting that many of those onboard were allegedly unable to swim.

“Preliminary information suggests that many of them could not swim, leading to heavy casualties,” a source disclosed.

Initial reports suggest that none of the passengers survived the incident, though the precise number of deaths has yet to be independently confirmed, according to TheSun.

As of the time this report was filed, security agencies had not released any official statement verifying the incident or confirming the reported casualty figures.

The incident has further heightened security concerns in the region, where armed groups continue to carry out operations across multiple communities.
