At least seven individuals sustained injuries on Sunday after a massive explosion caused a cargo train to derail in southwestern Pakistan, officials and local media outlets confirmed.
The incident occurred along a railway line in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province.
According to local broadcaster 24 News, the blast appeared to target a freight train travelling toward the cantonment area of the city.
Residents in the area said loud gunfire erupted shortly after the explosion, raising fears of a coordinated attack.
A spokesperson for Civil Hospital Quetta confirmed that the injured victims were transported to the hospital, where emergency protocols were swiftly activated to handle the situation.
Babar Yousafzai, special assistant to the provincial home department, stated that rescue personnel and security forces were immediately dispatched to the scene while investigators began assessing the cause and nature of the explosion.
No organisation has so far come forward to claim responsibility for the attack.
Balochistan, a mineral-rich province that serves as a strategic route in the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor project, has experienced years of separatist unrest, with militant groups demanding what they describe as the “liberation” of the region.
