Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, alongside key stakeholders, observed the arrival of the CMA CGM SCANDOLA on Monday, January 29th.
This LNG-powered container vessel, with a capacity of 14,812 TEUs, marks a significant milestone as the first LNG-powered vessel to navigate to West Africa.
Docking at the Lagos Lekki Deep Sea Port, Nigeria’s most advanced and deepest seaport, the vessel’s arrival was confirmed by Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sanwo-Olu on New Media.
Gawat stated, “The CMA CGM SCANDOLA, with an overall length (LOA) of 366 meters and a width of 51 meters, is the pioneer LNG-powered container vessel to sail to West Africa, making its first stop in Tema before arriving at Lekki Port.”
He emphasized that the Lekki Deep Sea Port stands as Nigeria’s sole port equipped to accommodate such large container vessels, underscoring its pivotal role in maritime operations.
Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the management of Lekki Port, Lekki Freeport Terminal, and CMA CGM for their significant contributions to the Nigerian maritime industry, highlighting the port’s achievements since its commissioning.
“Lekki Port LFTZ Enterprise Limited (LPLEL) is a joint venture enterprise owned by Lekki Port Investment Holdings Inc (China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd. and Tolaram); 75%, The Lagos State Government; 20% and the Federal Government of Nigeria through the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA); 5%,” Gawat added.
