UPDATED: Sanwo-Olu shuts Ojodu Grammar School over students’ death
Following the death of at least two students on Tuesday, the Lagos State Government has shut the Bab Fafunwa Millennium School, Ojodu.
The PUNCH quoting the Commissioner for Education, Folashade Adefisayo, who visited the school on Wednesday, reports that the school, formerly known as Ojodu Grammar School, will remain shut until January 2022.
WuzupNigeria reported that the students lost their lives after being crushed by a truck whose driver reportedly lost control around Ogunusi Road in the Ojodu Berger area of the state.
Reports revealed that some students of the school protested the death of their colleagues on Wednesday morning before the closure.
Some students expressed grievances that the school remained open about 24 hours after the bloody incident.
One of them said, “Why should the school reopen. The street is still smelling of the flesh of dead bodies. The exam should be postponed and students given automatic promotion if possible.”
Reacting to the opening of the school without regard for the loss of lives and injured victims, a mother described the move as “embarrassing”.
She added, “How will the government do such? What do they want other mothers to be thinking of. My daughter is not in school and I have come to tell them that she must not fail. If they are heartless, I am not.”
Recall that the incident provoked an attack against the police operatives and officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority at the scene.
Confirming the unrest, LASEMA director-general, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said “this unfortunate incident provoked some bystanders into taking laws into their hands by attempting to lynch NPF, LASTMA officials and other first responders at the scene, destroying vehicles and other properties.
“The number of fatalities and casualties could not be ascertained at the time of reporting.
“The attack by the miscreants led the Emergency Team to head back to base as the scene was insecure and unsafe for rescue and recovery operations.”
Subsequently, officials of LASTMA were alleged to have been involved in the unfortunate truck accident.
Oreagba said, “From the reports we received on the incidence, the driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle, probably because of mechanical reasons. The police are investigating the matter; the public should await their report.
“LASTMA does not have a traffic management duty post around the accident scene. And all patrol personnel had reported back to base for the daily parade as at the time the accident occurred leaving only those at their traffic management posts,” Oreagba noted.
