Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered the reopening of the “Ounjè Eko” Sunday market, which offers a 25% discount on staple food items like rice, beans, gari, bread, eggs, tomatoes, and pepper.
The announcement was made by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, on X (formerly Twitter).
He quoted the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, who spoke to the media in Lagos on Wednesday.
“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed that the Sunday market Ounjè Eko with 25% cut in prices should return on Sunday,” Omotoso posted. He also added, “Agric and Food Systems Commissioner Abisola Olusanya tells the media – all is set. Lagosians, are you ready?”
The “Ounjè Eko” markets first opened in March 2024 but ended after a few weeks. They were set up to help Lagos residents buy staple foods at reduced prices, with 27 locations in Ikeja, six in Lagos Island, nine in Ikorodu, five in Epe, and 10 in the Badagry divisions.
The markets will reopen on Sunday, giving Lagosians another opportunity to buy essential food items at lower prices.
