Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved the establishment of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission to advance the state’s energy sector.
The commission will oversee electricity regulation in Lagos, ensure smooth operations in the electricity market, and lay the foundation for future energy reforms.
Sanwo-Olu appointed key leaders to the commission, subject to confirmation by the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Engr. Abimbola Odubiyi will serve as the non-executive Chairman on a part-time basis. Dr. Fouad Animashaun has been appointed the Pioneer Executive Member and Chief Executive Officer of the commission.
Mrs. Kofo Olokun-Olawoyin will handle regulatory compliance, legal advisory, and registration and licensing processes essential for the efficient operation of the electricity market.
Oluwaseun Fadare, as Executive Commissioner (Engineering and Standards), will utilize his expertise in engineering and power plant management to ensure efficient operations across the electricity value chain.
Mrs. Bunmi Benson, also part of the commission, will set up the Independent System Operator to oversee the administration, monitoring, and enforcement of electricity market rules.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the establishment of LASERC is a vital step in achieving energy reforms in Lagos.
“This commission will not only regulate the electricity market in Lagos but also ensure fairness, transparency, and a structured marketplace for all stakeholders,” the governor stated.
LASERC is expected to promote investment in Lagos’ energy sector and improve electricity supply for businesses and households. With these reforms, Lagos aims to set a standard for energy regulation and sustainable power solutions in Nigeria.
The newly formed commission will play a significant role in driving Lagos’ vision for a reliable, efficient, and modern energy system.
