Santos FC has begun an internal investigation following reports of an altercation during training between star forward Neymar Jr and teenage prospect Robson de Souza Jr, commonly referred to as Robinho Jr.
The episode reportedly unfolded at the club’s training facility, where what began as a routine football disagreement is said to have escalated into a physical confrontation, raising concerns among team members.
In a formal statement, the club confirmed that it has taken immediate action to determine the facts surrounding the incident.
The club stated, “Santos FC informs that by determination of the presidency, an internal inquiry process was instituted immediately after the facts occurred to analyse the episode involving athletes Neymar Jr and Robson de Souza Jr (Robinho) during training this last Sunday (03/5) at CT Rei Pelé. The club’s legal department is responsible for conducting the inquiry.”
Developments intensified after Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte reported that Robinho Jr’s legal team had formally escalated the matter, submitting documentation seeking accountability over Neymar’s alleged behaviour.
In the filing, Robinho Jr claims Neymar “uttered insults in an offensive manner, applied a trip, and dealt a violent slap to the face” of the teenager.
His representatives have also requested access to video recordings from the training session, along with a meeting with club officials, pointing to concerns about the “absence of minimum security conditions” within the club environment.
According to sources, tensions began during an intense training session held shortly after Santos’ 1-1 draw with Palmeiras.
During a competitive drill, Neymar reportedly became frustrated after being outplayed by the 18-year-old, reacting sharply to the situation.
The Brazilian forward is said to have told the youngster to “take it easy” before the situation escalated into a verbal exchange and minor physical contact.
Although some accounts suggest both players later settled their differences in the dressing room, Robinho Jr’s representatives argue the matter remains unresolved, criticising Neymar’s “impulsive attitude” and questioning the club’s response.
