SABOTEUR! Rats break into ATM machine, shred notes worth N17 million [Photos]

Rats reportedly broke into an ATM machine at the State Bank of India branch in Tinsukia district and shredded banknotes worth N17 million (1.2 million rupees, £13,300; $17,600).

BBC reports that the discovery was made after some technicians who came to fix a malfunctioning cash machine opened it up.

It was gathered that banknotes worth more than 1.2 million rupees had been shredded by rats.

The Hindustan Times reports that Police official Prakash Sonowal said the rodents probably entered the machine through a hole meant for wiring, adding that the machine had been out of use for about 12 days.

An official said technicians, who took the unit apart found banknotes of 2,000 and 500 rupee denominations destroyed. They managed to salvage another 1.7 million rupees.

Meanwhile, pictures of the chewed cash were widely shared on Twitter with one of them showing a dead rodent lying in the debris.
