Russia has said its latest wave of attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding region struck facilities involved in producing drone components as Ukrainian authorities reported deaths, injuries and widespread damage in the capital. The Kyiv Russian strikes are among the most significant since the beginning of the conflict.
According to Reuters, Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Thursday that its forces targeted drone-related facilities, a military depot and a logistics hub during overnight air and drone attacks. In particular, the Kyiv Russian strikes this week targeted several key infrastructure sites.
The claims about the specific targets came from Moscow and were not independently verified. Additionally, international observers have expressed concern over the ongoing Kyiv Russian strikes.
Moscow lists military targets
Russia’s Defence Ministry said the strikes were directed at infrastructure supporting Ukraine’s military operations. The latest Russian strikes impacting Kyiv have attracted notable scrutiny in recent weeks.
The ministry identified facilities producing components for unmanned aerial vehicles among the targets, alongside a military storage site and logistics infrastructure.
The latest attacks formed part of continued exchanges of missiles and drones between Russia and Ukraine as the war stretches further into its fifth year. As a result, the frequency of Kyiv Russian strikes has heightened regional tensions.
Ukraine reports deaths, injuries
Ukrainian authorities said Russian ballistic missiles killed at least five people in Kyiv and injured more than two dozen others.
Another person was reported killed in the surrounding Kyiv region. Kyiv Russian strikes have resulted in both fatalities and injuries in these areas.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said people were trapped inside a residential building, while fires broke out at several locations.
Residential and non-residential buildings, warehouses and a children’s hospital were also reported damaged.
Parts of Kyiv lose power
The attacks left parts of the Ukrainian capital without electricity as emergency teams responded to fires and damaged buildings. Meanwhile, the situation was further complicated by ongoing events tied to the Russian strikes on Kyiv.
A Reuters witness reported hearing more than a dozen explosions during the assault.
Ukraine’s emergency service also released footage showing rescuers battling fires and helping people escape damaged structures.
Diplomatic efforts remain stalled
The latest strikes come as international attempts to secure an end to the conflict continue to struggle. Against this backdrop, Kyiv Russian strikes have remained a focal point in recent diplomatic discussions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly called for more interceptor missiles to strengthen the country’s air defences.
