Russia has pledged to continue providing military support to Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. These three Sahel countries are intensifying efforts to tackle insurgent attacks and strengthen their armed forces.

According to Vanguard, Russia and the Alliance of Sahel States agreed to deepen military cooperation after talks in Niamey, Niger’s capital. Officials discussed growing security threats in the region.

The Alliance of Sahel States consists of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. These three junta-led countries have turned increasingly toward Moscow for security support. They made this move after cutting or reducing ties with former Western partners.

In a joint statement, Russia and the Sahel bloc said Moscow would continue supporting efforts. These efforts are meant to strengthen the operational capacity of the armed forces of member states.

The pledge came as jihadist attacks continue to affect communities and military positions across the Sahel. This is especially the case in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov took part in the talks. Officials described this as a high-level engagement. The meeting aimed at strengthening security cooperation between Moscow and the Sahel alliance.

The meeting also showed the growing influence of Russia in the region. In these areas, military-led governments have sought new alliances following strained relations with France, the United States and regional bodies.

The Sahel countries have repeatedly argued that they need stronger military partnerships to confront armed groups operating across borders.

Russia’s latest pledge comes amid persistent insecurity in the region. Meanwhile, insurgents are launching attacks on army positions and civilian communities, despite ongoing military operations.

Reuters reported that Russia and the Sahel states agreed to expand their military collaboration. This move comes as insurgent violence continues to threaten stability across the region.

The development also reflects a wider shift in the diplomatic and security direction of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger. These countries have moved closer to Moscow in recent years.

The three countries formed the Alliance of Sahel States after military takeovers. They did so following disagreements with the Economic Community of West African States.

Russia Sahel support is expected to remain a major part of the bloc’s security strategy. This is essential as the countries continue to battle armed groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.

Moscow has presented itself as a reliable security partner for the region. Meanwhile, the Sahel governments have continued to defend their decision to deepen cooperation with Russia.

The latest talks in Niamey suggest that Russia and the Alliance of Sahel States plan to maintain close military ties. This will happen as insecurity continues to reshape alliances across West Africa.
