Russia has placed former world chess champion, Garry Kasparov, on an international wanted list, according to reports from TASS, as part of an ongoing criminal investigation involving him.

Authorities reached the decision during investigative procedures linked to a case already opened against Kasparov.

The development marks an escalation in legal actions previously taken in his absence.

In December of the previous year, a Russian court had already issued an in absentia arrest warrant for Kasparov on allegations connected to the justification of terrorism. That ruling came amid broader proceedings targeting him under Russian criminal legislation.

Kasparov, who has also been labelled a “foreign agent” by Russian authorities and listed in the country’s registry of terrorists and extremists, faces accusations of publicly justifying terrorism and allegedly issuing calls for such activities through information and telecommunication networks, including online platforms.

He has been residing outside Russia for several years and has not returned amid the ongoing legal proceedings.
