Portugal captain and Al Nassr forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, has broken an unwanted record after missing his 34th career penalty during an international friendly against Ireland on Saturday.

Ronaldo’s spot-kick was stopped by Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, making him the player with the most penalty misses in football history, according to Planet Football on Monday.

Despite the setback, Ronaldo’s overall penalty record remains impressive. He has taken 211 penalties in his career, converting 177, giving him a success rate of 83.8 per cent — well above the global average.

The report also listed other top players with high penalty misses in modern football. They include Ronaldinho with 16, Zlatan Ibrahimovic with 17, Ciro Immobile with 19, Francesco Totti with 20, Neymar with 22, and Lionel Messi with 32.

Messi previously held the record for the most missed penalties before Ronaldo overtook him this year.

Ronaldo has missed four of his last 16 penalties in the past year, but he still leads in total penalties taken and scored.

The 39-year-old remains one of football’s most prolific scorers, with his penalty record underscoring both his longevity and consistency at the highest level of the game.
