Ronaldo breaks goal record in 2-1 comeback win over Ireland

Manchester United forward, Cristiano Ronaldo, has become the highest goal scorer in the history of international football after scoring two late goals to help Portugal secure a 2-1 comeback win over the Republic of Ireland.

Ronaldo’s late heroics saved Portugal from a shocking defeat in their first World Cup qualifying match against Ireland.

Ronaldo led the Portuguese in their quest to book a spot in Qatar 2022 as the home team hope to put their EURO 2020 disappointment in the past.

The former Juventus star went into this game with 109 goals so far, level on the roll of honour with Iran’s Ali Daei and 101 clear of the combined total mustered by Ireland’s starting XI before this game, UK Guardian reports.

Ronaldo is now in front of the Iranian with 111 goals from 180 games for his country.

Reacting after the match, Ronaldo told Sky Sports, “I’m so happy, very happy, and not only because I beat the record but for the special moments that we had.

“Two goals at the end of the game, so tough, but I have to appreciate what the team did tonight. We believed until the end.

“For the supporters, I’m so glad.”
