Armed robbers attacked and fatally shot Taiwo Oyekanmi, an accountant of the Ogun State Government, and made off with millions of the government’s funds in Abeokuta, the state capital.

According to reports, Oyekanmi, the Director of Finance at the Governor’s office, Oke-Mosan, had withdrawn an undisclosed amount of money from a Fidelity bank branch in Abeokuta.

As he was returning to the office, he was ambushed by about five hooded gunmen. The assailants intercepted the homemade bullion van on the overhead bridge at Kuto, opening fire on the accountant.

Armed with a sledgehammer, they forcefully broke into the bullion van, seizing the government’s funds.

Oyekanmi and other aides, who sustained gunshot injuries during the attack, were rushed to the State General Hospital, Ijaye. Sadly, the accountant succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

It was revealed that a police escort, who was supposed to accompany the accountant, had taken permission to attend to family matters and was not part of the team during the incident.

The Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, confirmed the incident, stating, “This afternoon, the accountant, the Director of Finance with the driver and one other person left for Fidelity Bank to make some withdrawal.

“They went with a homemade bullion van. They were supposed to have a police escort, but for certain reasons, the person was permitted to travel to attend to some issues.

“Consequently, he was not part of the movement today. According to the story, after making the withdrawal, and on their way back to the office, they were accosted.
