At least 23 people have lost their lives in a devastating road accident at the Muhammadu Buhari Interchange Flyover in the Hotoro area of Kano State.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Friday, has left several others injured and receiving treatment at Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital.
The Federal Road Safety Corps, Kano Sector Command, confirmed the casualty figure in a statement released after the accident.
According to the FRSC’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, a preliminary investigation revealed that the crash involved a DAF trailer carrying goods and a staggering 71 passengers.
The accident was attributed to dangerous driving and excessive speeding, which caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
Labaran said, “Upon receiving the distress call, the FRSC Kano rescue team, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, promptly moved to the scene to carry out a rescue operation and restore normal traffic flow.”
He added that the Sector Commander, CC U. M. Matazu, has ordered a detailed investigation into the crash to determine further details and prevent future occurrences.
Rescue teams worked swiftly to evacuate the victims, with those injured rushed to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital for urgent medical attention. Authorities have also intensified safety awareness campaigns, warning motorists against overloading and reckless driving.
As investigations continue, the FRSC has urged road users to adhere strictly to traffic regulations to avoid further loss of lives.
