Rivers school proprietress arraigned over alleged assault of student

The proprietress of Phronesis Nursery, Primary and Secondary School in Rivers State, Mrs Orjiugo Udeala, has been arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court over the alleged assault of a 16 year old student.

According to court documents obtained on Wednesday, Udeala was arraigned by the Rumuepirikom Police Division on charges bordering on conspiracy and assault occasioning harm.

The case, marked Charge No. REMC 94 C/2026, was filed before the Magistrate’s Court in the Rumuepirikom Magisterial District.

Prosecutors alleged that the defendant and another person currently at large conspired to assault the student, identified as Gift Nwala Onyeche.

The charge further stated that the teenager was allegedly flogged with a cane and struck on the ear and head, resulting in injuries.

Udeala pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read in court.

The presiding Magistrate, Charles Wobisike Akpeh, granted her bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like amount, who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

The matter was subsequently adjourned until August 10, 2026, for further hearing.

Meanwhile, the human rights organisation, Lawyers Watch for Justice International Initiative, said it has been monitoring the matter from the investigation stage through to the arraignment.
