The commencement of local government council elections in Woji Ward 6, Obio/Akpor area of Rivers State was delayed on Saturday due to the late arrival of election materials and a low voter turnout.
According to a report from the News Agency of Nigeria monitoring the exercise, as of 10:12 a.m., election materials had yet to arrive at several polling units within the ward.
Polling units affected by the delay included Units 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 15, 29, and 30, where accreditation had not yet begun, and only a small number of voters were seen waiting to cast their ballots.
Voters and party agents were seen discussing the situation while awaiting the arrival of the election materials. However, NAN correspondents also noted the absence of visible security personnel at the polling units.
One of the voters, Mr. Kingsley Amadi, who was waiting at Polling Unit 29, shared that he had arrived early but was still waiting for election materials. Despite the delay, he remained optimistic about the process, expressing confidence in a smooth and transparent election. He attributed the low turnout to the political crisis that had occurred in the lead-up to the election.
Another voter, who identified herself as Oroma, expressed confidence that the election process would accurately reflect the will of the people.
The chairmanship and councillorship elections are being held across all 23 local government areas of Rivers State.
