Governor Siminalayi Fubara has expressed confidence that the forthcoming Rivers State International Marathon will attract global attention and cast a favorable spotlight on the state.
Addressing preparations for the marathon scheduled for May 18, 2024, in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Governor Fubara, detailed the manifold advantages of the international marathon.
He highlighted its crucial role in addressing social issues, especially among youth, citing the allure of cash prizes as a powerful incentive for young participants.
On the economic front, the governor underscored the myriad opportunities for local businesses during both the preparation phase and the event day itself. He anticipated a surge in economic activity, with local enterprises poised to thrive amid the influx of participants and spectators.
“Importantly, the marathon serves as a robust platform to showcase the state’s exemplary security credentials. As international athletes converge on Nigeria from various parts of the world, they will witness Rivers State’s status as a secure haven, dispelling any doubts and boosting investor confidence in the region’s safety,” stated Fubara.
“Moreover, beyond its economic and security implications, the marathon offers a unique opportunity to celebrate and highlight Rivers State’s rich cultural heritage. By spotlighting indigenous traditions and customs, the event promises to rejuvenate the tourism sector, enticing visitors to explore the state’s vibrant cultural landscape,” Fubara added.
Echoing the governor’s sentiments, project consultant Femi Abegunde of Arch Raphael Limited praised the marathon as a pioneering endeavor that sets a standard for future athletic events in Nigeria and beyond.
He emphasized the inclusivity of the event, with special provisions made to accommodate and challenge indigenous athletes to surpass existing records set by their Nigerian counterparts in marathons nationwide.
Detailing the organizers’ plan for local athletes, Abegunde highlighted the introduction of the Nigerian elite prize tag as a testament to their commitment to nurturing local talent and enhancing the country’s standing in the global marathon community.
“As Governor Fubara reiterated, the Rivers State International Marathon is not merely a race; it is a catalyst for positive change, uniting communities, promoting athleticism, and projecting Rivers State onto the world stage with pride and distinction.”
