The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has kicked against plans by the Rivers State House of Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, cautioning that the move could plunge the state into instability.

In a statement released on Wednesday by the party’s spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the APC leadership said it was concerned about what it described as “unfortunate developments” emanating from the House of Assembly.

While recognising the legislature as an independent arm of government with constitutionally assigned oversight responsibilities, the party maintained that impeachment should not be contemplated under the current circumstances.

It added that it would not stand by while unresolved internal crises within the Peoples Democratic Party were allowed to spill over and threaten the stability of an APC-led administration in the state.

The party argued that the impeachment threat appears to be tied to budget-related issues, which it said fall short of grounds for such a drastic legislative action.

It recalled that during the period of emergency rule in Rivers State, a budget was presented to the National Assembly by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in May 2025. According to the APC, the budget received approval from the Senate on June 25, 2025, and from the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025, with a total allocation of ₦1.485 trillion.

The APC noted that the approved budget was structured to cover a one-year period, extending until August 2026.

It further stated that the governor is not constitutionally obligated to submit a supplementary budget if he considers the existing appropriation sufficient.

The party also pointed out that constitutional provisions allow a governor to continue spending for up to six months into a new fiscal year, insisting that the impeachment threat is devoid of both legal and moral justification.

The Rivers APC called on members of the State House of Assembly, particularly lawmakers elected on the party’s platform, to resist what it described as external influences aimed at destabilising the government.

“We will do everything possible to ensure that the APC-led government of Rivers State is not undermined through internal disagreements,” the statement said.
The party urged lawmakers to immediately halt the impeachment process, warning that it could tarnish the image of the APC and undermine ongoing developmental initiatives across the state.

It also appealed to all political actors to respect democratic principles and prioritise governance, rather than allowing political rivalries to disrupt peace and stability in Rivers State.
