Residents resist PHCN from disconnecting light from cable (video)
Residents of a Lagos neighbourhood resisted the attempts of some men of the Power Holding Company Of Nigeria (PHCN) to disconnect their power from the main grid.
The video opened with a man in PHCN jumpsuit on a ladder in the move to disconnect the power source. Other PHCN men were seen in jumpsuit while there were also policemen around. A man holding a megaphone was singing solidarity songs. there were also inaudible noises in the background.
On another electric pole some meters apart, one of the protesting residents of the neighbourhood sat on the ladder resisting another PHCN officer from climbing the pole.
A gun-slinging policeman warned the man sitting on the ladder to leave or face his wrath. The man resisted firmly, stating that he is not there to engage in any struggle, but only to resist them from disconnecting the light.
The video was posted by Mayegun’s diary on Facebook.
Many commentators on the video support the the residents’ move. They wonder why PHCN officials would request exorbitant charges from consumers even when the hardly provided the light.
Toochukwu S Ijeamaka said, “I wish all community in Nigeria will do the same.”
“Stupid of them, whey they flash their light for two days the nest thing you will see is bill, how I wish everybody will learn from this,” Ifeanyi Elliot commented.
“We did the same in my area, let it go around. Fear not police, (it) is a civil matter. Nigerians, lets stand for our right, NEPA can not determine your consumption, they should give us prepaid meter,” said Shola Stevens.
