Bandits have reportedly taken control of the Nagwamase Military Cantonment, a major military training camp in Kontagora, Niger State, forcing over 23 nearby communities to abandon their homes.
This development has sparked serious concern among local leaders and Assembly members, who urgently call on the Federal Government for help.
During a plenary session, the member representing Kontagora II in the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdullahi Isah raised an urgent motion, revealing that the bandits have established at least eight separate camps within the area.
Isah explained, “This military camp has now been taken over by bandits, who have established at least eight different camps in the area. The camp’s takeover poses a serious security challenge to communities in both Kontagora and Mariga Local Government Areas.”
The Assembly urged the state government to work with military authorities to reclaim the camp and protect residents. The Assembly also asked for support to provide the military with modern equipment and logistics to effectively address the situation.
Isah described the intensity of the attacks, noting that many locals had been abducted and remained in captivity. “The communities within the camp have been under severe attacks over the past month, with bandits operating freely,” he said, appealing for immediate action to “flush out the terrorists.”
The bandits’ control of the area has forced thousands of residents—mostly farmers—to flee, leaving behind their homes and farmland.
