The House of Representatives has launched an investigation into bribery allegations involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The claims were made by social media influencer Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, who accused the EFCC of dropping money laundering charges against Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, after allegedly receiving a ₦15 million bribe.
Rep. Patrick Umoh from Akwa Ibom State raised the issue during Thursday’s plenary session, expressing concern about the impact of these allegations on Nigeria’s global image. Umoh highlighted the seriousness of the claims, saying, “The publication alleges that the EFCC dropped money laundering charges against Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, upon collection of the sum of ₦15,000,000.”
He further explained that the accusations also involved Bobrisky not serving his sentence in prison after being convicted for defacing the Naira, instead allegedly staying outside the Nigerian Correctional Service’s facilities.
Umoh stressed the need for urgent action, stating, “We are disturbed about the damning allegations against Nigerian critical law enforcement agencies—the EFCC and the NCS—established by this hallowed chamber to fight corruption and incarcerate convicted individuals.”
The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, referred the matter to the Committees on Financial Crimes and Reformatory Institutions, with a report expected within three legislative weeks. The investigation aims to address these serious claims and safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies.
