The Nigerian House of Representatives on Wednesday urged the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace to stop issuing airstrip licenses to private individuals and organizations.
The House also called for the revocation of existing licenses, including one recently granted to Living Faith Church, led by Bishop David Oyedepo.
The decision followed a motion presented by Rep. Sulaiman Abubakar Gumi, titled “Need to Stop Issuance of Airstrip License to Private Individuals and Organizations in the Country.” Gumi raised concerns about potential security risks posed by private airstrips.
Gumi highlighted that, on October 6, 2024, Bishop Oyedepo announced the approval of an airstrip for Living Faith Church at Canaanland, Ota, Ogun State.
He stated, “Granting airstrips to private individuals and organizations could enable illegal importation of firearms and drugs, worsening issues like insurgency, kidnapping, and banditry.”
He further referred to a 2014 incident in which a private jet linked to a religious leader was seized in South Africa, carrying $9.3 million in cash reportedly intended for arms purchases.
The House instructed its Committees on Aviation and Legislative Compliance to ensure that the Ministry follows through with these directives, reinforcing their commitment to safeguarding national security.
