The House of Representatives has opened an investigation into the Nigerian Football Federation over allegations of mismanagement of development grants received from the Fédération Internationale de Football Association and the Confederation of African Football between 2015 and 2025.

The decision followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by Hon. Adedayo Samuel Adesola and co-sponsored by Hon. Nwaeke Felix Uche, who expressed concern over reports of poor financial accountability in the football body despite the inflow of international funds meant to support grassroots and infrastructure development.

Adesola said the NFF had received millions of dollars in grants and sponsorships from FIFA and CAF to develop football across all levels, yet the sport’s growth and infrastructure had not reflected such heavy investment.

He recalled several past audits and investigations, including FIFA’s 2016 audit that questioned how development funds were spent, and local probes by anti-corruption agencies.

The lawmaker cited examples such as the construction of the Birnin Kebbi Stadium, which he said did not reflect the scale of financial input reportedly made for the project.

“The state of our football infrastructure and the recurrent controversies around funding demand urgent attention,” Adesola said. “We must ensure that every kobo meant for sports development is properly accounted for and used for the purpose intended.”

He stressed that transparency and good governance were vital to restoring Nigeria’s image in international football, especially as the country prepares for upcoming AFCON and World Cup qualifiers.

Following the debate, the House resolved to set up a special investigative committee to review NFF’s financial operations from 2015 to date. The committee will summon NFF officials to present records of all FIFA and CAF grants and expenditures.

Lawmakers said the probe would help ensure greater accountability in football administration and rebuild both public and international trust in Nigeria’s sports management.
