The House of Representatives has ordered an investigation into the Nigerian Customs Service over allegations of smuggling involving 2,000 cars and 6.5 million kilograms of rice.

During Thursday’s plenary session, the House directed its Committee on Customs and Excise, along with the Committee on Defence, to examine the operations of the NCS at the nation’s borders. The investigation will focus on alleged smuggling activities, accusations of complicity, and cases of brutality.

The committees will also review the role of military personnel attached to Customs patrols to ensure their actions follow legal guidelines and respect human rights.

The Speaker, Rep. Tajudeen Abass, emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in the operations of border security agencies, stating that smuggling undermines Nigeria’s economic stability and security.

Further updates will emerge as the committees begin their investigations.
