The House of Representatives has condemned the armed ambush on the convoy of Jafaru Mohammed Ali, who represents Borgu and Agwara Federal Constituency in Niger State, describing it as a cowardly and tragic act.

The attack occurred on Tuesday afternoon along the Lumma–Babanna Road in Borgu Local Government Area, a border corridor known for frequent bandit attacks and cross-border movement of armed groups.

The PUNCH report stated the incident happened between 1 pm and 2 pm as the lawmaker’s convoy was heading toward Babanna, a community close to the Republic of Benin border.

In a statement issued on Friday by the House Spokesman, Akin Rotimi, the Green Chamber confirmed that several security personnel were killed, while the lawmaker’s driver and aides sustained injuries. Several vehicles in the convoy were also damaged.

Rotimi said the lawmaker was on his way to a constituency engagement when the attack occurred.

“The remote location of the attack shows how far members of the House go to reach their constituents, no matter the distance or terrain,” the statement read.

“The cowardly attack reportedly resulted in the deaths of gallant security operatives, injuries to his driver and aides, and damage to several vehicles in the convoy. The House deeply mourns the brave operatives who paid the supreme price in the line of duty and extends condolences to their families, the relevant security agencies, and the good people of Niger State.”

The House also wished the injured a speedy recovery and urged security agencies to carry out a full investigation, arrest the attackers, and prevent future incidents.

Reaffirming its commitment to safety, the House said it would continue to support the executive and security agencies in tackling terrorism, banditry, and other crimes threatening peace in the country.

Communities across Niger State, especially around border areas, have faced repeated attacks in recent months.

In September, gunmen on motorbikes killed 22 people attending a baptism in the western part of the state. The attack happened in the Tillaberi area near Burkina Faso and Mali, where armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda and ISIS are active.

Also in June, at least 17 soldiers were killed in a gunfight with suspected bandits in Mariga Local Government Area after intelligence reports revealed that armed men were advancing toward Bangi, a hotspot for kidnappings and cattle rustling.
