The House of Representatives has directed its Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness to conduct a thorough review of the National Emergency Management Agency to assess its adherence to its mandate and its effectiveness in responding to emergencies and disasters.

This review stems from concerns raised about NEMA’s delayed and ineffective interventions in various disaster situations.

According to The PUNCH, the resolution to review NEMA’s activities was prompted by a motion brought by Hon. Philip Agbese, who expressed concerns about the agency’s performance.

He noted that NEMA has strayed from its primary duty of responding to emergencies and now focuses primarily on distributing relief materials.

Agbese warned that “Nigerians will lose confidence which would lead to its eventual transformation into a bureaucratic institution and a cash cow for unscrupulous individuals.”

The House of Representatives has mandated the Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness to provide recommendations on how to enhance NEMA’s efficiency and effectiveness.

The committee is expected to submit its report within four weeks for further legislative action.
