The Nigeria Police Force has urged the public to report any cases of misconduct by police officers to their superiors, including the Heads of Complaint Response Units or the state Commissioners of Police.
In a statement issued on Saturday, titled “Public Notice: Misuse of Name, Office of the Inspector-General of Police”, Force Public Relations Officer ACP Muyiwa Adejobi warned against fraudulent activities involving the name of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, or other senior officers.
“The Nigeria Police Force is concerned about the persistent unprofessional conduct of a few police officers which undermines the standards and reputation of the force,” Adejobi said.
He added that some officers continue to engage in unethical behavior despite repeated warnings and disciplinary actions. Of particular concern is the misuse of the IGP’s name to intimidate victims and hinder them from reporting such incidents.
“Even more alarming is the fraudulent use of the name and office of the Inspector-General of Police to perpetrate these illegal acts. The intention behind this tactic is to intimidate victims into believing that the IGP is aware, and approves of their illegal activities,” the statement read.
The NPF advised the public to exercise caution when approached by officers or individuals claiming connections with senior police officers for undue influence or favors.
Adejobi emphasized that the public should report any suspicious activities or misconduct directly to the police through established channels. Contact details for reporting include:
DCP Akin Fakorede, Head, IGP Monitoring Unit, Abuja: 08184077076
ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force PRO, Abuja: 08037168147
CSP Taiwo Oyewale, Head, IGP Special Investigation Unit, Abuja: 08069318238
SP Sherriff Lawal, ADC to the IGP: 08094712605
The NPF reaffirmed its dedication to upholding integrity and professionalism within the force.
“We assure all Nigerians of our commitment to the highest standards of integrity and professionalism,” Adejobi stated.
He called for collaboration between the public and the police to ensure justice and fairness, emphasizing the importance of reporting any suspicious activities promptly.
