A member of the House of Representatives, Alex Ikwechegh, has publicly apologised for hitting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, in Abuja.
The incident which was captured in a now-viral video sparked many Nigerians online to call for justice, demanding accountability for Ikwechegh’s actions.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Ikwechegh expressed regret over the “unfortunate” event, stating it does not reflect his values. He said, “I sincerely apologise for my words and actions during this incident. I recognize the distress and frustration this has caused Citizen Abuwatseya, his family, and the public at large.”
He acknowledged his role as a public servant, saying, “As a public servant, I understand the weight of my role and how my words can impact others. While I am human and not infallible, I remain accountable for my actions.” Ikwechegh mentioned that he and Abuwatseya have discussed ways to resolve the issue respectfully.
He also apologised to the Inspector General of Police for his “unintended disparaging remarks” and to the House of Representatives for any negative impact his actions may have caused.
The House has urged Nigerians to wait for the police investigation into the matter. On Monday, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command detained Ikwechegh for questioning at the Maitama Police Station.
In the video, Ikwechegh was seen angrily confronting the driver, whom he accused of being disrespectful after the driver delivered snails he had ordered. During the heated exchange, Ikwechegh was heard saying, “I can make this man disappear in this…,” while hitting the driver.
Abuwatseya remained calm during the assault and asked, “Are you slapping me, sir?” to which Ikwechegh replied, “I just did, slap me back. How dare you?”
