Award-winning Nigerian artist, Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has publicly acknowledged veteran Afrobeat star D’banj for playing a vital role in the international recognition of the genre, particularly in the United Kingdom.

Recall that D’banj’s 2012 hit single ‘Oliver Twist’ marked a significant milestone as the first Nigerian song to break into the top 10 of the UK official chart, a feat widely regarded as a turning point that paved the way for subsequent Afrobeats successes on the global stage.

During his sold-out performance at London’s O2 Arena on Sunday, June 8, 2025, Rema brought D’banj on stage and used the moment to express deep appreciation for both D’banj and renowned music executive, Don Jazzy, crediting them for creating opportunities that benefitted the new wave of Nigerian artists.

“First of all, I want to appreciate you for opening the doors. We [the new generational artists] do not do it alone,” Rema said.

“You were one of the first ones to bring Afrobeats to the UK. You and Don Jazzy held it down. Y’all open that door.

“I appreciate you for life. I love you from the bottom of my heart. If you never existed, I would have never existed.”

Rema’s tribute underlined the enduring impact of early Afrobeats pioneers on the genre’s evolution and their influence on the success of today’s global stars.
