Rejection hinders corps members, NYSC warns employers

The National Youth Service Corps has raised concern over the increasing rejection of corps members by employers across the country.

Speaking during the 2025 Annual Corps Employers’ Workshop held in Jos, Plateau State, the NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, said many corps members are being denied valuable work experience because organisations are turning them away.

Nafiu, who was represented by Deputy Director Gbamisola Salami, said, “Your organisations provide platforms for corps members to apply their skills and gain practical experience. Rejections hinder this objective.”

He also mentioned other problems such as employers failing to request corps members on time, not providing proper welfare, and in some cases, treating corps members poorly.

Nafiu appealed to organisations to build workplaces where corps members can feel supported and productive.

The Plateau State NYSC Coordinator, Jonathan Yavala, said the purpose of the workshop was to improve collaboration and fix communication gaps between the NYSC and employers. “You are not just supervisors but mentors and partners in nation-building,” he told those in attendance.

Also speaking at the event, the Plateau State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Musa Ashoms, said corps members need safe and supportive environments to grow and make real contributions to their communities.
