Redeemer’s University in Ede, Osun State, has announced that 185 students have graduated with first-class honours out of 1,341 undergraduates during its 17th convocation ceremony.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shadrach Akindele, made this known on Monday at a press conference held to mark the convocation and the institution’s 20th anniversary.
According to Akindele, 662 students will graduate with second-class upper degrees, 410 with second-class lower, 79 with third-class, and 5 with pass degrees.
He said, “A total of 1,341 students will be graduating during the convocation ceremony scheduled for October 9. Among them, 185 will receive first-class degrees.”
The VC also named Joel Durigbo from the Department of Mechanical Engineering as the overall best graduating student with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 5.0.
Akindele added that the postgraduate convocation would hold on October 10, during which 338 students will be awarded various higher degrees and diplomas.
He explained that the postgraduate awards include 109 Postgraduate Diplomas, 65 Master of Arts, 120 Master of Science, 25 Master of Business Administration, and 19 Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
“This year’s convocation is very special. We are not only graduating another set, ‘The Indomitable Set,’ but also celebrating 20 years of Redeemer’s University. This is indeed a season of double honour, and we give all glory to God,” he said.
The university will also confer honorary degrees on notable personalities, including the wife of a former Kwara State governor, Omolewa Ahmed; the President of Mount Zion Faith Ministries, Mike Bamiloye; and the Group Managing Director of Sahara Group, Kola Adeshina.
Akindele further announced that the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) had selected Redeemer’s University as one of eight private universities to train TETFund-sponsored candidates for postgraduate studies.
“This is a remarkable achievement, considering there are 168 private universities in Nigeria,” he said.
He added that Redeemer’s University had recently been ranked number two in Nigeria and number one in several Sustainable Development Goals in the Times Higher Education Impact Ranking.
