Mexican Javier Aguirre will replace Luis Garcia Plaza as coach of Liga strugglers Real Mallorca, the Spanish club announced on Thursday.

“I’m very happy to be here, to come back to La Liga,” Aguirre told a press conference.

The 63-year-old’s mission will be to save the island club from relegation as they sit 18th on 26 points, one point behind Cadiz who occupy the last safe place.

“We’ll have to draw on all our resources because we’re in a dangerous zone and there isn’t much time left,” continued Aguirre, who returns to Spain two years after leaving Leganes after they dropped into the second division.

Aguirre previously coached Atletico Madrid between 2006 and 2009 and Espanyol from 2012 to 2014. He also had stints with the national teams of Mexico (2009-2010), Japan (2014-2015) and Egypt (2018-2019).
