Spanish football giants, Real Madrid, have confirmed the signing of Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool on a contract that will run until 2031.

The 26-year-old right-back, who recently helped Liverpool win the Premier League title, leaves his boyhood club after making 352 appearances and winning major trophies, including the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020.

Alexander-Arnold’s move comes shortly before his Liverpool contract was due to expire. Real Madrid reportedly paid a transfer fee to secure him early so he can be part of their Club World Cup campaign in Miami next month.

The England international is expected to make his debut for the Spanish side on June 18, when they face Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia in their opening match of the tournament.

In a statement, Real Madrid welcomed the defender, praising his attacking strength and passing abilities. His arrival is expected to solve Madrid’s recent issues at right-back, with Dani Carvajal struggling with injury and Lucas Vázquez filling in out of position.

Alexander-Arnold also reunites with former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso, who was recently appointed as Real Madrid’s new head coach, replacing Carlo Ancelotti.

Although the transfer sparked mixed reactions among Liverpool fans—with some booing him during the second-to-last match of the season—support from figures like Jurgen Klopp and Mohamed Salah helped calm emotions. The mood improved at Anfield last Sunday when Alexander-Arnold lifted the Premier League trophy and was cheered by fans.

Real Madrid, who failed to win any major silverware this season, are looking to rebuild. Alongside Alexander-Arnold, they have also signed Dean Huijsen, a Spanish centre-back from Bournemouth, to strengthen their defence after a season hit by injuries.
