Rangers, Rivers United in title showdown as nine clubs fight relegation survival

The fate of record champions Enyimba, defending champions Remo Stars and Kano Pillars will be decided on the final day of the Nigerian Premier Football League season next weekend as the battle to avoid relegation intensifies.

Nine clubs, including Kwara United, El-Kanemi Warriors, Kun Khalifat, Plateau United, Niger Tornadoes and Warri Wolves remain locked in a tense survival fight with just one round of matches left to play.

Only three points separate 10th-placed Kano Pillars on 48 points from 18th-placed Niger Tornadoes, who sit on 45 points.

Kwara United, Plateau United and El-Kanemi occupy 11th, 12th and 13th positions respectively, all tied on 47 points but separated by goal difference. Enyimba, Remo Stars and Warri Wolves follow closely behind on 46 points each.

Niger Tornadoes still have a slim chance of escaping relegation if they secure victory against Shooting Stars in Minna and other results swing in their favour. A win would lift them to 48 points, which could be enough to ensure survival if teams above them fail to pick up points.

Kwara United appear to have a favourable route to safety as they travel to face already relegated Bayelsa United in Yenagoa. A draw may be sufficient for the Ilorin-based side if several of their relegation rivals fail to claim victories in their respective matches.

Attention will also be on Aba, where Enyimba host El-Kanemi in what is effectively a survival showdown. Victory for either side would significantly boost their chances of remaining in the top flight. However, a draw would favour El-Kanemi, who could survive depending on results elsewhere. For Enyimba, anything short of victory could prove disastrous.

A similar high-stakes encounter awaits Plateau United and Kano Pillars. Kano Pillars need only a draw to preserve their NPFL status, while Plateau United must secure all three points to guarantee survival.

Kun Khalifat, Remo Stars and Warri Wolves also face must-win situations heading into the final fixtures. Remo Stars arguably have the toughest assignment as they travel to Benin City to face Bendel Insurance. The Ogun State club must defeat the “Benin Arsenal” to stand any chance of avoiding the drop.

For Warri Wolves, the equation is straightforward — beat Abia Warriors at home or risk relegation. With Abia Warriors having little at stake in the title or relegation races, Warri Wolves will be hopeful of taking advantage on home soil.

At the top of the table, the battle for the NPFL crown remains just as fierce, with Enugu Rangers and Rivers United separated by only a single point heading into the final round.

Enugu Rangers currently lead the standings with 65 points, while Rivers United trail closely on 64 points. Rangers face a difficult away trip to Ikorodu City in Lagos, with the hosts still chasing qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup.

Rivers United, meanwhile, will welcome Katsina United to Port Harcourt knowing that a victory, coupled with any slip from Rangers, could hand them the league title. A draw for Rangers and a win for Rivers United would see the Enugu side settle for second place and a CAF Champions League ticket.

Elsewhere, the clash between Barau FC and Nasarawa United in Kano carries little significance, with both clubs already safe from relegation and out of contention for continental qualification.
