A heavy downpour that started in the early hours of Monday wreaked havoc in different parts of Lagos state destroying properties worth millions of naira.
The rain, which started around 9 am and lasted for one hour, was accompanied by stormy wind that held commuters stranded.
Updates from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) revealed that the rainstorm destroyed properties in Ikeja, Ikoyi, Oshodi, Agege and other parts of Lagos.
At the Motorways area and Toyin street in Ikeja, fallen trees on major parts of the roads caused heavy traffic gridlock which left commuters stranded as the roads were partially cordoned off to allow LASEMA and LASTMA officials remove the trees.
At Agege the storm brought down a street light along Balogun road, close to the Agege local government secretariat, preventing heavy-duty vehicles easy passage on the road.
At Ikoyi, the Alfred Rewane road was cordoned off to enable emergency officials to evacuate a tree which fell on two vehicles, a Toyota Camry and a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV).
LASEMA also reports that at Abule-Egba, a building consisting of four classrooms at 13 Erinjiyan drive collapsed due to the heavy rain. It, however, didn’t give any update on casualties. Another building also collapsed at Ladipo area in Oshodi due to the heavy rain.
LASTMA reports via its Twitter handle that the storm also pulled down a tree before McWen bridge inward CMS at Lagos Island.
Reports of flash floods also affected the free flow of traffic at Ijaiye area on the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, Bonny Camp at Victoria Island and Ogudu expressway inward Lagos Island.
