Qatar Olympic star, Abdalelah Haroun, dies in car accident

Qatar’s track and field athlete, Athlete Abdalelah Haroun, has died in a car accident, the Arab country’s Olympic team have confirmed.

In a statement released on the team’s official Twitter handle, the 24-year-old who was born in Sudan died on Saturday, less than a month to the summer Olympics holding in Japan.

“Team #Qatar sprinter and world 400m bronze medalist Abdalelah Haroun died today,” the statement read.

Haroun was a former world junior champion over 400 metres and took bronze in the discipline at the 2017 world championships in London.

He also won gold at the 2018 Asian Games and 2015 Asian athletics championships, in addition to indoor silver in 2016.

Haroun gained eligibility for Qatar in 2015 and is one of several African-born athletes who have switched allegiance to race for the Gulf state.
