The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has announced that flying Russian flags in Nigeria is a treasonable offense.

This comes amid ongoing protests across the country, where some demonstrators have waved Russian flags.

In a statement after an emergency security meeting with President Bola Tinubu at Aso Rock, Musa emphasized that those involved will face legal consequences.

He said, “We will not accept anybody, any individual flying any foreign flag in Nigeria. That is a treasonable offence, and it will be viewed and treated as such.”

Musa highlighted the increase in violence and criminal activities during the protests, including looting and theft. He said, “Criminals have taken over, a lot of looting taking place, stealing and all sorts happening.”

He also warned against any attempts to overthrow the government, stating, “Nigeria is a sovereign nation, Nigeria is a democratic nation. All security agencies are here to defend democracy and ensure that democracy continues to strive. We will not accept anyone pushing or taking any action to want to push for any change of government.”

Musa noted that many of those flying the flags are young people who are being manipulated. He added, “We are following up with those who are sponsoring them. We have identified those areas and we are going to take serious action against them.”

The Chief of Defence Staff reassured the public that the military is working to maintain peace and stability. “The President is clear on his instructions for us not to accept anyone that wants to disrupt the peace and tranquillity of Nigeria. We are working closely to ensure that peace and tranquillity are maintained.”

Musa warned that any further attempts to disrupt the nation’s sovereignty would be met with serious consequences. “For people supervising elements to push individuals to carry Russian flags in Nigeria, that is crossing the red line and we will not accept that. Those who have done that will be prosecuted.”
