The Uganda Communications Commission on Wednesday shut down 23 radio stations in the country for allegedly promoting witchcraft on air.

The commission’s spokesperson, Pamela Ankunda who spoke with dpa said the affected stations were promoting witchcraft and trying to con people out of money.

She said the stations’ licencses were suspended after they had guests on air claiming they could cure HIV and other incurable diseases.

Ankunda said,

“The radios have been promoting witchcraft. People claimed on these radios to cure diseases like AIDS and cancer. These people have been fraudulently getting money from the public. Their operations and licences have been suspended until they are able to assure the commission through writing that they will abide by the minimum broadcasting standards.’’

The commission spokesperson who stated that the country had 292 radio stations in operation, disclosed that most of them were privately-owned.

She said religious leaders, self-proclaimed prophets and traditional healers across Africa always want to take advantage and claim to do supernatural things.
