The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned Abiola Odutayo in court over the death of Adetunji Opayele, co-founder of Bumpa, who died in a road accident on March 4, 2025.

According to Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin, Odutayo was charged with reckless and careless driving, which led to Opayele’s death. She appeared before Court 1, Tinubu, on March 12, 2025, after being discharged from the hospital.

Hundeyin, in a statement shared on social media, said, “We acknowledge public concerns regarding the tragic accident that claimed the life of Adetunji Opayele (Teejay) on March 4, 2025. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and all who have been affected by this loss.”

He confirmed that Odutayo was arraigned for “driving on a public highway in a reckless and careless manner without due care and attention to other road users and causing the death of one Tunji Opayele, aged 32.” The court granted her bail, and the case was adjourned until April 16, 2025.

The incident has sparked public outrage, with over 35,000 Nigerians signing a petition demanding justice. Many believe the charge of reckless driving is not severe enough and are calling for a manslaughter charge instead.

Eyewitnesses claim that after the accident on Ozumba Mbadiwe Road in Lagos, Odutayo allegedly refused to assist the injured Opayele, citing concerns about staining her car. Bystanders struggled to get him medical help, and multiple hospitals allegedly refused to treat him. He was later pronounced dead after failing to receive quick medical attention.

The Lagos State Police Command reassured the public of their commitment to fairness and justice as investigations continue.
