The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has warned Nigerians to prepare for three days of thunderstorms and rainfall starting from Monday, June 3, across many parts of the country.
In a weather report shared on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet said the forecast covers Monday through Wednesday, with different regions expected to experience morning and evening thunderstorms and rainfall.
For the northern region, NiMet said morning thunderstorms are expected on Monday in states such as Taraba, Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Kebbi, Sokoto, Katsina, Jigawa, and Kano. Later in the day, more rains and thunderstorms are likely in parts of Taraba, Kaduna, Sokoto, Borno, Kebbi, and Zamfara.
In North-Central Nigeria, states like the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Niger, and Nasarawa will see morning rains, while Plateau, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and other areas will experience rain in the afternoon and evening.
In the southern part of the country, NiMet said cloudy skies are expected in the morning with light rain likely in places like Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom. By evening, heavier showers may hit states including Lagos, Oyo, Ekiti, Delta, Enugu, and Bayelsa.
The forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday follows a similar pattern, with a mix of thunderstorms and rainfall expected to continue across the northern, central, and southern regions.
NiMet also issued a safety warning, advising the public to take precautions during this period.
“Strong winds may come before the rains, especially where thunderstorms are expected. People should secure loose items and avoid driving during heavy downpours,” the agency said.
It also advised Nigerians to stay away from tall trees, disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and remain indoors when possible to avoid hazards.
“Airline operators should request airport-specific weather updates to help plan flights safely. Everyone is encouraged to stay informed by following our updates regularly on [www.nimet.gov.ng,”](http://www.nimet.gov.ng,”) NiMet added.
As the rainy season sets in, NiMet continues to monitor weather patterns closely and provide timely alerts to keep Nigerians safe.
