Manchester United defeated Everton 4-0 at Old Trafford on Saturday in their pre-season friendly ahead of the 2021/22 Premier League season starting next week.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fielded a number of first-team players including skipper, Harry Maguire, Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes who were returning to Old Trafford after their international involvement.
Mason Greenwood capitalised on a mix-up between Lucas Digne and Jordan Pickford eight minutes into the game to give United the lead in front of the 55,000-strong crowd.
EURO 2020 finalist, Luke Shaw teed up his Three Lions mate, Maguire, with a cross that the United skipper headed past Pickford to double the lead seven minutes after.
Fernandes made it three one minute to the half-hour mark through a sublime freekick curled beyond the outstretched hand of Pickford after Nemanja Matic was fouled on the edge of the area.
Diogo Dalot scored United’s fourth goal to make matters worse for Everton in their third friendly of the summer in the Rafael Benitez era when he evaded his marker to loop a header over Begovic, Pickford’s replacement, with the last kick of the game.
United end their 2021 pre-season with a record of two wins(including against Derby County), a draw against PL newcomer, Brentford, and a defeat against QPR from four games.
Solskjaer’s men face Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United for their season opener at Old Trafford next Saturday.
