A loud explosion rocked the Transmission Company of Nigeria station in Awada at about 2:34 a.m. on Wednesday, plunging Anambra State and parts of Enugu into darkness.

Electricity customers across Anambra and Oji River in Enugu were left without power following the blast, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company confirmed through its communications head, Emeka Ezeh.

“The power outage being experienced is due to an explosion at the TCN station at Awada,” said Ezeh. “We are closely monitoring the situation with the TCN team, who are working assiduously to restore supply. We hope electricity will be back soon once their work is complete.”

No explanation has yet been given for the cause of the explosion, and TCN has not issued a public statement.

The blackout is disrupting households and businesses alike, with many customers expressing frustration on social media over the unexpected darkness and uncertainty of restoration times.

In a separate incident back in Katsina State earlier this month, the NSCDC arrested two suspects—aged 25 and 18—in connection with vandalism of a TCN 132kV high-tension tower. The suspects were found with parts from the vandalized tower.

As power remains out, residents in affected areas urge prompt action from authorities to restore light and prevent similar disruptions in the future.
