A prominent Italian surgeon, Sergio Alfieri, renowned for performing surgeries on Pope Francis, is currently under investigation by prosecutors, as disclosed by the Gemelli hospital in Rome on Thursday.
Alfieri has conducted two surgeries on the Pope, including a hernia operation in June and a colon surgery in 2021.
The investigation was initiated based on allegations reported by Italy’s La Stampa daily, claiming that Alfieri falsely declared to have conducted surgeries when he was elsewhere.
The accusations suggest a potential scam to unlawfully receive additional fees from the private sector.
Alfieri’s lawyer, Carlo Bonzano, responded to the allegations, stating, “The surgeon is certain he has always respected the rules.”
Alfieri himself expressed confidence and told Repubblica daily, “I am not at all worried” about the investigation.
The Gemelli hospital issued a statement expressing trust in the ongoing judicial investigation, committing to full cooperation to clarify all aspects.
The hospital also affirmed its confidence in Professor Sergio Alfieri’s work, acknowledging his unquestionable professional and human qualities.
The Gemelli hospital, often referred to as “Vatican III,” is a preferred choice for pontiffs.
Pope Francis had a hernia operation conducted by Alfieri in June, and colon surgery was performed in 2021.
The Vatican has refrained from providing comments on the ongoing investigation.
