Pope Francis has died at the age of 88, the Vatican announced on Monday morning.

According to Vatican officials, the Pope passed away peacefully at his residence, Casa Santa Marta, in the early hours of the morning.

“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church,” said Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who is the Vatican’s camerlengo.

The Pope’s death came less than 24 hours after he made what would be his final public appearance. On Easter Sunday, he was seen in a wheelchair on the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican, smiling and waving to thousands of worshippers.

“Dear brothers and sisters, Happy Easter,” he said.

Though visibly weak, Pope Francis joined the crowd in celebrating Easter. His traditional Easter speech and blessing were read by one of his aides while he sat and watched.

After the blessing, he was driven around St Peter’s Square in his white open-roof car. The vehicle paused several times to allow him bless babies brought to him by their parents.

Pope Francis had served as the head of the Roman Catholic Church for 12 years. During his time as Pope, he dealt with several health issues but continued to perform his duties for as long as he could.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Vatican in the coming days.
