Pope calls on FG to safeguard religious freedom amid violence

Pope Leo XIV has spoken out on the persistent concerns surrounding the persecution of Christians in Nigeria, acknowledging the severity of the hardships faced by citizens of different faiths and calling on the Nigerian government to strengthen efforts toward genuine religious freedom and nationwide protection.

During a public engagement, the Pope noted that the violence troubling the country affects more than one religious group.

He underscored that Christians and Muslims alike have been victims in attacks driven by terrorism, long-standing land disputes, and underlying economic pressures.

“In Nigeria, in certain areas, there is certainly danger for Christians but for all people,” Pope Leo XIV said.

“Christians and Muslims have been slaughtered. There’s a question of terrorism. There’s a question that has to do a lot with economics, if you will, in control of the lands that they have.”

While expressing sorrow over the significant number of Christian casualties, he also pointed to the wider insecurity engulfing many regions.

“Unfortunately, many Christians have died and I think it’s very important to seek a way, the government with all people — to promote authentic religious freedom [and] respect for all people.”

His remarks follow ongoing reports of assaults on rural settlements, widespread abductions, and recurring clashes involving extremist elements and armed groups across the country.
