World number two and French Open champion Iga Swiatek has been suspended for one month after testing positive for a banned substance, trimetazidine, the International Tennis Integrity Agency announced on Thursday.
The 23-year-old Polish tennis star provided the positive sample during an out-of-competition test in August 2024. However, the ITIA determined that the violation was unintentional.
The agency stated, “The violation was caused by the contamination of a regulated non-prescription medication (melatonin), manufactured and sold in Poland, which the player had been taking for jet lag and sleep issues. The player’s level of fault was considered to be at the lowest end of the range for ‘No Significant Fault or Negligence.’”
Swiatek, a five-time Grand Slam champion, accepted the suspension. The ban started provisionally from September 22 to October 4, during which she missed three tournaments. This counts toward the sanction, leaving her with only eight days to serve.
She will also forfeit prize money from the Cincinnati Open, where she lost to world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the final shortly after the positive test.
