Tension rose in Oria-Abraka Community, Ethiope-East Local Government Area of Delta State, on Saturday as policemen from Abraka Division allegedly shot a girl, Rukevwe John, in front of Oria-Abraka Secondary School.

The policemen reportedly fled the scene after the shooting.

At the time of this report, Rukevwe John is fighting for her life in an undisclosed hospital.

Narrating the incident, the girl’s boyfriend, identified only as Precious, said he was making a U-turn while driving when someone hit his vehicle from behind. “I came down and saw they were policemen. I frowned at the way they approached me, then they entered my vehicle and drove off,” he said. Precious then heard a gunshot, which penetrated his car and hit his girlfriend sitting in the passenger’s seat.

A group called Initiative for Social Rights Concerns and Advancements has raised an alarm over the incident. They are calling on the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Surajudeen Olufemi Abaniwonda, to immediately investigate the matter, identify the officers involved, and prosecute them if necessary.

ISRCA National Coordinator, Comrade (Amb) Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, issued a statement about the incident.

He said before calling on CP Abaniwonda, he had contacted the Divisional Police Officer of Abraka, SP Fabian Ayameh, and the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe.

“The government should, as a matter of seriousness, end police brutality and extra-judicial killings,” Agberen said. “Policemen cannot just end the lives of citizens abruptly like that.”
